Let’s do a little experiment. If you’re reading this from your phone I want you to swipe away and head over to your photos app. (If you’re not on your phone, good for you! Go grab your phone and open up your photos.) Don’t get too lost in the rabbit hole of memories though, or maybe you should. I do love a good trip down memory lane. As you scroll through I’m sure you’ll see tons and tons of photos of your kids, maybe a few selfies with them and a screenshot of that recipe you want to try, but never quite get around to. Or is that just me? Hah! Anyways, as a Boston Motherhood Photographer I work with moms who all share the same struggles when it comes to getting in front of the camera.
Your phone is full (quite literally, hello ‘iCloud storage full’ notification) of countless adorable photos of your kids and maybe some of your partner with them too. Which always come out more flattering than the ones they take of you, of course. I’d bet money that there’s hardly any with you in the frame besides the silly selfies you take before your kiddos quickly snatch the phone away from you. Or maybe there are some with you in it, probably from your last photo session years ago. Even for you mamas who did invest in a photo session, your photos are meant to do so much more than sit on your phone or your hard drive. However, that’s a whole topic for another day (you bet I’m writing up a blog post about that!).
As moms we find lots of excuses not to be in front of the camera. First off, maybe you feel insecure about your appearance. Second, you may worry how your wild and unpredictable kids will act during a photo session. Or maybe you feel guilty about spending your money on something that isn’t a “necessity”.
You. Are. Worth. It.
Documenting you and your family is precious. Heck, having a photo session JUST for YOU is something that I think everyone should do, but I know that once we bring our babies into our lives it tends to amp up our desire to document our life with photographs. We’re all desperate to stop time and soak in all the details of our babies, but life moves too quickly.
I know so many moms yearn for artful, high quality images of themselves and their family, but delay booking the photo session for so long. If that is you, this is your sign. Book the photo shoot. Don’t wait until your kids are older and “better behaved” or you lose those 5 pounds you wish you didn’t carry. Don’t wait until your partner brings it up. Prioritize yourself.
As mamas we tend to carry so much of the mental weight of our families. We are continuously managing the inner workings of our little tribe in our minds.
Just a glimpse into our mental load
Daycare/school schedules
Upcoming birthdays and school events
Which kid reeeeallly needs to eat a vegetable today
Doctor’s appointments
Which kid needs to be reminded constantly to stay hydrated
Keeping a vague working concept of appropriate developmental milestones
Staying connected to your partner
Maybe maintaining some semblance of a social life
All of this to say cheers to you mama. You do so much for your family. You are irreplaceable and you are worth it. When looking back on your family memories you deserve to be seen. Even more than that. You deserve to be front and center. Book the session.
