Hi friends! I am excited to talk about this topic today! For lots of folks, preparing for a newborn photo session can be stressful. I wholeheartedly believe that it doesn’t have to be, especially if you are educated ahead of time and you know how to prepare! As a Metrowest Boston Newborn Photographer I love being able to connect with my clients and help them prepare for their newborn photos so that when the day comes they can simply enjoy the session and admire their beautiful newborn baby.
So let’s get on with it!
1. Prepare your outfits ahead of time
No one wants to be running around the morning of your newborn session trying to figure out what everyone should wear. If you book your session with me you’ll receive your copy of the CIP client experience guide, which has a section all about coordinating clothing as well as sample color palettes! You can also search on Pinterest for family photo outfits. My suggestion would be to search for light, neutral colored family outfits. Lighter, neutral colored clothing allows natural light to reflect onto your face, which creates great flattering light and avoids any harsh color casts that can come from bright, saturated colors.
2. If you’re having an in-home session, start paying attention to the natural light in your home
Let’s say your house gets great natural light coming into your baby’s nursery and your bedroom in the mid-morning time frame. That’s perfect, let’s have your session in the morning. Or, let’s say the nursery and your bedroom get better light in the afternoon, let’s plan for that timeframe! If you aren’t sure, always feel free to take photos of your home during different times of day and send them to me!
3. Tidy up the rooms that you plan on using during your newborn photo session
No need to go cleaning your entire house! I highly doubt that you’ll have the time or desire to clean your whole house anyways, haha. Try your best to declutter the one or two rooms that we will be using, it will go a long way for your photos.
4. Feed baby shortly before your session start time
The goal is for baby to be fed and happy! When they are full and content they are usually more agreeable to being swaddled up and shifting around while we are taking photos! We can pause your session at any time to feed baby or tend to whatever needs may arise. During most newborn sessions we have to pause at least once to change a diaper, feed baby some more or simply take a break to soothe them back to a happy, comfortable state.
5. Crank that heat!
About 30 minutes before your session set your thermostat to anywhere between 75-80 degrees. A warmer temperature helps your baby stay nice and cozy, which will help us keep baby happy for photos!
Those are my tried and true tips for preparing for your newborn photo session! I hope that you found this helpful, or if you know someone who would find this helpful, go ahead and share it with them!
